UNMISS chief has condemned the use of violence by the communities in Jonglei State and urged political, traditional and youth leaders to stop the cycle of killings in the devastated region.

Hilde Johnson told journalists today at press conference in Juba that the ongoing insecurity in Jonglei State is a huge test to the government and the UN peace mission, and all stakeholders should double efforts to curb violence that has endangered thousands of civilians and is likely to destabilize the whole country.

Ms Johnson said UNMISS is deeply concerned by hate speech statements made by some individuals adding that the hate messages could incite systematic ethnic violence.

She added that threats made to wipe out a whole ethnic group on the face of the earth were unacceptable and were against international law and South Sudan’s domestic laws.

Ms Johnson said the United Nations strongly condemned any statements that could incite ethnically based violence.

She urged community leaders in Jonglei to stop hate speech and the national government to bring to justice people involve in inciting violence.
