The vice president is in Pibor County in a mission to reconcile the Lou-Nuer and Murle warring communities, accompanied by senior government officials mostly from Jonglei State.

Riek Machar Teny left for Jonglei State on Wednesday to assess the security situation in Pibor County.

Lou-Nuer warriors attacked Murle villages after a peace conference organised by the Sudan Council of Churches supported by UNMISS failed due to counter allegations of raids during the peace process.

The UN estimates that more than 1,000 people have died in this cycle of violence between the Lou Nuer and Murle communities since the beginning of this year.
