Juba Teaching Hospital is appealing for volunteers to donate to its virtual blood bank set up a week ago in order to save lives of women in labour and traffic accident victims.

Claire Attwood, a doctor at Juba Teaching Hospital, told CRN News that the hospital set up a virtual blood bank because many patients were dying at the facility due to severe blood loss and lack of blood for transfusion.

She said the virtual blood bank was a good way for emergency situations because some patients cannot wait for a blood donation and others do not have relatives to donate when they need.

Dr Attwood added that so far 21 people have volunteered for the virtual blood bank and seven have already donated blood that was stored for emergencies.

She explained that virtual blood donors will be called by phone to replace the blood used in emergencies and sometimes they are asked to donate blood during urgent situations.

Dr Attwood called on those interested to become blood donors to call to 0955310712 or e-mail her at jubavirtualbloodbank@gmail.com.
