GOVERNMENT TO CHAMPION LAWS PROTECTING WOMEN’S RIGHTS

The Government of South Sudan has affirmed its commitment to promote gender equality through laws that protect women’s rights.

Gender Deputy Minister Priscilla Nyanyang Joseph said during the launch of a 15-day activism campaign against gender based violence that the government has affirmed its commitment to protect all people’s rights enshrined in the Constitution, Bakhita Radio reported.

Dr. Nyanyang added that the ministry will champion for laws that give women their rights to avoid marginalization and economic, mental, social and physical violence.

She added that her ministry has economic programmes to empower women.

Meanwhile the UN Women executive director outlined 16 policy steps to end violence against women in South Sudan.

The policy steps include making justice accessible to women and girls, ensuring universal access to critical services and adopting and enforcing laws.
