The National Legislative Assembly today passed the National Bureau of Standards Bill 2011 to its third reading.

The bill will pave way for better quality imports into South Sudan.

Caretaker Chairperson of Energy, Commerce and Industry Committee, Henry Dilah Odwar, explained that South Sudan is a consumer country and it needs to set standards for all imported goods so that people are not continuously cheated with junk products.

He said some imported drugs lack the right ingredients to cure certain diseases.

Mr Dilah explained that the standards law will pave the way for the establishment of a Bureau of Standards Council that will set principles and quality of import and export goods.

He added that the council will make sure standards are kept and the traders use appropriate weights and measurement tools.

The bill is expected to be enacted into law next week.
