The UN Security Council yesterday deplored the failure by both the governments of Sudan and South Sudan to redeploy their troops from Abyei a and urged them to leave the disputed area immediately and without preconditions.
The members of the Security Council issued a statement saying there are no preconditions for the implementation of the agreements signed by the parties including the withdrawal of forces.The Council urged both Sudan and South Sudan to implement agreements on Abyei in spirit and letter.
It asked both countries to facilitate the safe return of internally displaced persons to their villages in Abyei and to allow humanitarian access to the area.
The Council urged both parties to finalize the establishment of the Abyei Area Administration and the Abyei Police Service.
The press statement followed a briefing to the UN Security Council on the situation in Abyei by the new chief peacekeeper Herv√Ö¬Ω Ladsous.
