The Government is urging UNIMISS, the UN Mission in South Sudan, to fulfil its mandate to protect civilians from militias sponsored by Sudan.

Government spokesperson Barnaba Marial Benjamin told journalists that the state has signed a deal with UNMISS that says that the mission’s primary role is to protect civilians.

He said it was disturbing that a neighbouring country trained and send militias into South Sudan and killed civilians and UNMISS failed to act.

Dr. Marial added that the Government will discuss the issue with UNMISS chief Hilde Johnson.

He said UNMISS should deploy troops into areas being targeted by Sudan’s sponsored militias.

Dr. Marial stressed that South Sudan will work to protect its civilians and borders.

He added that UNMISS should request for more troops from Japan and South Korea, two countries that pledged to contribute with soldiers to the UN mission in South Sudan.
