The interior ministry is phasing out elderly and illiterate police officers to replace them with young and educated people.

Deputy interior minister Salva Mathok Gengdit told Bakhita Radio that the move aims at boosting security across the country.

He explained that his ministry would recruit university and secondary school leavers that fit the required standards of educated police officers.

Mr. Mathok said South Sudan needs a strong and well organized CID, the Criminal Investigation Department, Immigration, customs and border police to beef up security.

South Sudan Police Service is a combination of former SPLA soldiers, Sudan police officers and newly recruited and trained civilians.
