A prison officer shot a soldier dead by mistake yesterday morning in Tonj, Warrap State.

Fedrick Mayik, prison director of Tonj South County, told Don Bosco FM that the incident happened while the police was searching for people who play dominoes and cards in morning hours and smoke marijuana at the Tonj Mayor’s request.

He said the soldier Malual Lual Atek was killed by Gabriel Juba Mading, a prison police officer.

Mr. Juba said he was taking tea when someone told him that Mr. Lual was an inmate trying to escape from his colleague John Magek.

He said he ran to help his colleague and took the gun from him.

Mr. Juba explained that he told the deceased to stop running but he didn’t.

Then he shot into the air to scare him, but unfortunately the bullet killed him.

The owner of the gun, prison officer Magek, said he told the culprit before giving him the gun that Mr. Lual was not an escaping inmate.
