The Pope is in Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis, with other world religious leaders to sign a common commitment for peace.
Pope Benedict organized a day of reflection, dialogue and silent prayer for peace and justice in the world to mark 25 years of a similar event called for by Pope John Paul.Members from the major world religions were invited to Assisi for today’s journey under the theme Pilgrims of Truth, Pilgrims of Peace.
The representatives of the world’s major religions will make speeches and sign a common commitment to peace, but will not pray together.
The Pope prepared for the Assisi gathering by hosting a prayer service yesterday at the Vatican, during the Wednesday General Audience.
Pope Benedict said at the end of yesterday’s the celebration that today’s pilgrimage for truth and peace may help people to march towards God together, and to reinforce their commitment to serve peace.
He asked the faithful to accompany him in prayer as he journeys today to Assisi for the celebration of the Day of Reflection, Dialogue and Prayer for Peace and Justice in the World, together with representatives of different religions.
