Mothers have been urged to immunize their children less than five years of age against polio.

Gulliver Wani from the Expanded Program on Immunization for Polio in Yei River County said polio accounts for the majority of paralysis cases in South Sudan, Easter Radio reported.

He added that the only preventive measure against polio was a vaccine given to children through the mouth in the form of drops.

Mr. Wani said polio is a very dangerous disease that can paralyse children for life.

He urged parents to welcome the vaccinators to their homes to enable children under five years of age, including the newborn, to take the vaccine.

The ministry of health is launching a new polio vaccination campaign on Tuesday, Nov 1 targeting an estimated 3.1 million children across the country.
