The Catholic Church is starting a three-day symposium tomorrow to celebrate its role in the independence of South Sudan and to welcome the future.

The Symposium One Church from every Tribe, Tongue and People from past to future kicks off tomorrow at Nyakuron Cultural Centre in Juba and concludes with a thanksgiving mass on Sunday at St. Theresa’s Cathedral in Kator.

Bishop Erkolano Lodu Tombe of Yei is the chairman of the Symposium Taskforce. He told the press today that the event intends to celebrate the role of the Church in South Sudan and Sudan, the challenges it faces and prepare a roadmap for a better Sudan and South Sudan.

He added that contributors come both from home and abroad, and from the Church and the government.

Assistant Bishop Santo Loku Pio of Juba added that the Symposium will be an historical moment since members of the Church in both countries did not come together for over 20 years.

He added people from both countries met together for the last time in 1984 during the Eucharistic Congress.

The participants include ten-member delegations from the nine dioceses of Sudan and South Sudan.
