The South Sudan National Assembly said it will lobby for the welfare of the national police services to enhance its capacity to operate professionally.

The head of the Parliamentary sub-committee for security in Greater Equatoria, Joseph Ngere, told SCR News that the police must have a certain level of education to be able to keep law and order.

He acknowledged that almost 70 percent of the current police officers are illiterate which has led to some reservations in the forces.

He added that the illiterate officers either take a literacy course or be phased out.

Mr. Ngere also said the 2012 budget will address the issue of a decent pay for police officers.

The police service has been in the limelight for its unprofessional attitudes towards civilians while keeping law and order.
