Three Darfur peacekeepers died and another six were injured Monday evening when armed assailants attacked a patrol in Zam Zam IDP camp, near El Fasher, North Darfur.

One attacker was also killed.

Ibrahim Gambari, the head of UNAMID, the peacekeeping force in Darfur, strongly condemned the attack.

He said the UNAMID was doing a regular nightly patrol made of unarmed police advisors and armed military escorts to protect civilians.

Mr. Gambari called upon the Sudanese authorities to mount a full investigation of the incident immediately to find and bring to justice the perpetrators as soon as possible.

Since the initial deployment of UNAMID in 2007, 33 peacekeepers have been killed due to hostile fire.
