Juba Teaching Hospital Emergency Ward is being overstretched while trying to respond to daily cases that emptied its drugstore.

Nurse Diana Kepsolsol, in charge of the ward, told SCR News that some 50 patients are admitted daily in her section and three quarters suffer from malaria although there are also diarrhoea, heart and liver cases.

She said the hospital is very low on quinine, and ran out of syringes, antibiotics for chest infections and bed sheets and many patients are lying on the floor due to lack of beds.

Deputy Minister of Health Yatta Loli Lugar said it was unfortunate that the Juba Teaching hospital ran out of so many drugs including quinine, necessary for treating cerebral malaria.

He added that he was told that the hospital had a budget and was well stocked with all necessary drugs.

Dr. Yatta urged the hospital administration to set priorities and make sure critical drugs are available to save patients.

The deputy minister was speaking during a visit to Juba Teaching Hospital this afternoon.
