Residents in Upper Nile capital got a day-off yesterday in order to join in a campaign to dig water channels in Malakal and try to drain the city of waters from heavy rains.
Labour and Public Service state minister Aban Makol Ajal granted a public holiday to all government workers to dig water channels for stagnant water in Malakal, Voice of Love reported.Adwok Deng Nyikang, an administrative officer working with a number of women in Malakal main market, said there was too much water and people should join hands together and drain it out.
He asked traders in market to make waterways saying the work is too much for the public administration of environmental sanitation alone.
Mr. Deng said people thought the campaign to dig water channels was only for government workers.
He commented that it was impossible for those who have their homes flooded to expect the government to do drain them.
Two heavy consecutive rain showers fell over Malakal on Saturday and Sunday making all roads impassable in a city that has a poor road network.
