More than 2,000 families from Abyei who were displaced to Agok four months ago are in serious need of assistance and recent floods have made their situation worse.
The UN says that more than 110 thousand people from Abyei took refuge in South Sudan after Sudanese forces occupied the area last May.Abyei Catholic assistant parish priest Biong Kwol Deng was among the people displaced to Agok, in South Sudan.
He told SCR News today that Abyei families in Agok are in a deplorable situation and last week’s heavy rains made their misery worse.
The floods killed one woman, destroyed many shelters and closed some key roads cutting Agok off from supply places.
He said IDPs and locals are now staying in the open and in dire need of food, medicines and sheltering materials.
Fr. Kwol said Agok is cut off due to flooded roads and there is no food in the markets.
He added that Abyei IDPs who fled to Warrap and Western Bahr el Ghazal have returned to Agok because they have no money to survive in Wau, Turalei and other towns.
Fr. Kwol urged the government of South Sudan to deliver on its promises to the Abyei people and find a lasting solution to the issue so that they can go home a settle down.
Fr. Kwol said the Abyei people are South Sudanese and the government should not neglect them.
