Warring communities in Eastern Equatoria are asking for an independent leadership from outside the state to stop a long ongoing conflict that has claimed too many lives already.

Retired Bishop Paride Taban of Torit was part of a reconciliation team that the Sudan Council of Churches sent to East Jonglei two weeks ago to mediate between the Murle and Lou Nuer communities.

Bishop Paride told SCR News that the local people asked for security and civil leaders from outside the state to be impartial and stop the violence that has engulfed the two communities instead of taking sides.

Bishop Paride said the locals recalled the leadership of Venancio Loro, a commissioner who came from Equatoria and did a very good job sticking to his role without favouring anyone.

He added that the Council of Churches plans to organize workshops among the Murle and Lou Nuer communities in order for them to discover the value of forgiveness and stop the spiral of violence.

Bishop Paride said the presence and commitment of the Church and the Government in the area were critical in order to solve the conflict once for all.
