The presence of the UN-Ethiopian troops in Abyei have not improved the situation there because the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) are still in the area.

Speaking to Bakhita Radio in Juba, Kwaja Yai, the project coordinator of Abyei Start-up Emergency Project, said pro-Khartoum militias and SAF soldiers are still causing rampant insecurity in Abyei.

Mr. Yai added that the SAF and militias are beating, raping and imprisoning Abyei residents who attempted to re-enter the area.

He said Abyei would not be safe for residents to return unless SAF and their allied militias withdrew from the region.

Mr. Yai said some IDPs in Abyei have returned to the nearby villages.

He revealed that no one returned to Abyei town.

Since the occupation of Abyei by SAF many people from the area have fled to the neighbouring states of Warrap and Northern Bahr el Ghazal.
