The UN Mission in South Sudan, known as UNMISS, has condemned the harassment of a UN Human Rights official by the South Sudan Police Services last Saturday in Juba.

UNMISS spokesperson Aleem Siddique told the press that there was a direct attempt to arrest Benedict Sannoh by the police and the UN official sustained a number of injuries that required treatment at the UN’s hospital.

Mr. Siddique noted that that the arrest attempt was totally unacceptable.

He added that it was against the terms of the agreement signed between the UNMISS and the government of South Sudan.

Mr. Siddique called upon the government to investigate the incident and make sure that the suspects are treated with fairness.

Mr. Siddique said the professionalism and the integrity of the police service should be improved in order for them to respect human rights and the Constitution of South Sudan.

Benedict Sannoh was allegedly beaten by police while on an official mission for the UN Human Rights agency last week in Juba.
