SOUTH SUDAN WOMEN DISCUSS 30 PERCENT REPRESENTATION AND CONSTITUTION ISSUES

Different South Sudan women’s associations met to discuss their rights in the permanent Constitution of South Sudan and to secure the 30 percent representation promised them by the President of the Republic during his election campaign.

Housing and physical planning minister Jema Nunu Kumba told journalists that the meeting also discussed women’s place in the permanent Constitution still to be formulated and their participation in the next government, Bakhita Radio reported.

The participants also asked the Republic of South Sudan to ratify several UN conventions and treaties, especially on the rights of women and children.

Ms. Nunu added that women wanted to know why the Transitional Constitution granted them a 25-percent participation in public posts while President Kiir promised them a 30-percent share during the campaign.

She added women want also to see inscribed in the Constitution that the legal age for marriage is 18 years.

Ms. Nunu said women in the country need more empowerment.

She advised women to be more focused, united and working harder to catch up with the development of South Sudan.

The workshop brought women representatives from the ten states of South Sudan.
