Employees at Yirol West County Hospital were on strike last week due to salary related issues.
Achut Achut, who is Director General of Lakes State Ministry of Health, told Good News Radio yesterday that hospital staff went on strike from Tuesday until Friday morning due to problems with salaries. He explained that the staff was paid by CUAMM, an Italian medical charity that runs the hospital, and the Ministry of Health complemented the salary until it took over the hospital’s management.
Dr. Achut said the practice was meant to respect the government pay scale for civil servants.
Dr. Achut explained that when the Ministry took full charge of staff salaries at Yirol Hospital; the workers wanted to receive double pay both from CUAMM and the Ministry of Health for the same job.
He added that by law it was illegal.
Dr. Achut said the issue was resolved on Sunday.
He informed the workers that the Ministry of Health had taken full charge of their salaries and that they would the same pay like other government employees in the State.
He reminded the workers to comply with Public Service regulations on salaries.
Hospital sources told SCR News that the real issue at stake was that the workers were asked to sign a payment sheet with an amount far superior to the salary they were receiving.
