The UN says that at least 600 people died and between 750 and 985 were wounded in a revenge attack mounted by Murle warriors against Lou-Nuer villages in Uror county of Jonglei State.

UNMISS said local reports indicate that between 26,000 and 30,000 cattle were stolen during the attacks and many homes have been destroyed.

State authorities added that over 250,000 people were displaced by the fighting in Pieri, Motat and Pulchol villages in Uror County and nearly 200 people may have been abducted.

UNMISS chief Hilde Johnson said the cycle of violence between the two communities must stop.

She urged restraint by both sides of the tragic conflict and called for urgent reconciliation efforts, availing UNMISS support to the process.

She added that the mission also stands ready to use its military assets to try to deter further escalation.
