The Speaker of the National Assembly called upon the President of the Republic to prioritise security, peace and stability for South Sudanese to lead happy lives.

Addressing legislators from both houses at the first joint sitting of the national legislature, James Wani Igga said insecurity both in urban and rural areas deters development.

He added that arms among civilians are more dangerous to the stability of South Sudan than any external threat.

He called for a nationwide disarming programme of civilians holding unauthorized guns.

Mr. Wani called for respect of human rights and the rule of law.

He added that the international community is eyeing South Sudan and Southerners must change some unacceptable forms of behaviour not to accompany neighbouring leaders in the black books of human rights perpetrators.

Mr. Wani called for a liberal democracy and encouraged a multi-party system in South Sudan.

He urged officials engaged in corruption practices to use the resources for development and service delivery instead.
