The Israeli government has reaffirmed its commitment to establishing a satellite ground centre at the University of Juba to support scientific education, research and access to satellite data for students in South Sudan.

The commitment was reiterated during a meeting last week between the Caretaker Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, Ateny Wek Ateny, and Israel’s Ambassador to South Sudan, H.E. Gershon Kedar, in Juba.

Ambassador Kedar described the proposed centre as part of Israel’s ongoing capacity-building initiatives aimed at strengthening scientific knowledge and skills among students in South Sudan.

Minister Ateny welcomed the initiative, saying it would provide students with opportunities to access scientific information and develop skills comparable to those of their counterparts in other parts of the world.

He also reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting the programme.

The discussions focused on the importance of the proposed facility in expanding access to satellite data, promoting scientific activities and strengthening research programmes at the university.

The centre is expected to provide students with opportunities to engage in satellite-related studies and access relevant scientific information, potentially contributing to the development of science education and research capacity in the country.

The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen educational and scientific cooperation between South Sudan and Israel, with a focus on expanding learning opportunities and building local expertise in science and technology.
