The United Kingdom has appointed Rebecca Fabrizi as its next Ambassador to South Sudan, succeeding David Ashley, who is due to complete his posting next month.
The British Embassy in Juba announced on Wednesday that Fabrizi will take up the position in October 2026, marking the latest change in the UK’s diplomatic leadership in South Sudan. The appointment was initially announced by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office on August 4.
Fabrizi brings more than three decades of diplomatic experience, having held senior positions across Europe, Africa and Asia.
According to the British Embassy, her previous assignments have included serving as Deputy Director in the FCDO’s Africa Directorate, Acting British High Commissioner in Lilongwe, Special Envoy for Small Island Developing States and Head of the Caribbean and SIDS Department, as well as diplomatic postings in Belgrade, Canberra, Brussels, Rome, Geneva and Beijing.
In remarks following her appointment, Fabrizi said she was honored to take up the role and described it as a privilege to serve in a country whose people have demonstrated determination in the face of significant challenges.
She said she looked forward to getting to know South Sudan and its people while working with the government, civil society and international partners on peace, stability and opportunity across the country.
Fabrizi will succeed David Ashley, who has served as British Ambassador to South Sudan since January 2025.
Ahead of his departure, Ashley said it had been a privilege to serve in Juba and highlighted the UK’s work in South Sudan, including support for health, education and humanitarian services.
Ashley also stressed the importance of peace and improved management of national revenues in moving South Sudan forward.
The British Embassy says the UK maintains relations with the South Sudanese government and works on areas including peace, security, economic and humanitarian issues, human rights and democratic governance.
Fabrizi’s arrival comes as the UK continues its diplomatic engagement with South Sudan on peace, humanitarian and development issues.
