A three-day consultative workshop on the Family Law Bill has opened in Torit, Eastern Equatoria State, bringing together government officials and stakeholders to discuss legal reforms aimed at protecting families and promoting justice.

Director General in the State Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, Dominica Idwa Vitale, said the proposed law will help eliminate harmful cultural practices, protect vulnerable groups, and promote equal access to family resources.

Mrs. Idwa said many widows continue to face discrimination and are denied inheritance rights after the death of their husbands. She called for an end to harmful cultural practices that violate human rights.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the South Sudan Union of Persons with Disabilities and a member of the National Family Law Bill Committee, Mrs. Roda Atanasio Zurur, urged communities to support the proposed legislation, saying it will safeguard the rights of women and families across the country.

The workshop was organized by the National Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare in collaboration with the State Ministry of Gender, with support from the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP.
