President Salva Kiir Mayardit has approved the establishment of Yei University at the former UNMISS base in Yei Town, in a move aimed at expanding access to higher education in the region.
The decision was made on Thursday, April 16, 2026, following a briefing by Emmanuel Adil Anthony, who had just returned from a medical trip. During the meeting, the governor reported that Central Equatoria State remains largely calm, despite a recent incident in Jebel Iraq.
President Kiir urged the state leadership to continue strengthening security, coordination, and community awareness, particularly in preparation for the December 2026 elections.
Meanwhile, Governor Adil noted that more than 150,000 people are currently in the Khor Khaltan area. In response, the state government, in collaboration with the Community Defense Forces, has deployed additional forces and is establishing a police station and an administrative office.
He also revealed that discussions are ongoing with the Ministry of Mining to enforce proper licensing in gold mining areas. Border operations have been intensified to track down individuals involved in criminal activities.
In addition, the governor highlighted an ongoing crackdown on gangs and other criminal groups, alongside plans to rehabilitate offenders—including minors—and support their reintegration into society.
