Drivers and motorists in Torit town are urging the state government to regulate and unify fuel prices across petrol stations.
Speaking to Radio Emmanuel, Wani Oyet, a driver operating along the Torit–Juba highway, said rising fuel costs have made it difficult for drivers to sustain their businesses and support their families.
He explained that despite increasing passenger fares, profits remain low due to high fuel prices and additional costs such as checkpoint fees along the road.
“Previously, when diesel was 6,500 SSP, charging passengers 70,000 SSP was manageable. But now, even after increasing fares to 100,000 SSP, fuel prices are too high. After expenses like fuel and checkpoints, nothing remains—even vehicle repairs become impossible,” he said.
A boda-boda rider, Karim Nebil, called on the Ministry of Finance and relevant authorities to set standardized fuel prices across all stations.
“Fuel prices differ from one station to another. The government should fix prices so that all stations sell at the same rate. This will help avoid confusion and ensure fairness,” Nebil said.
Another rider, Hamis Faisal, noted that petrol now costs about 11,500 SSP per liter, significantly affecting transport services.
“Transport fares have increased because of fuel prices. Some passengers understand, but others still expect old prices, which makes our work difficult,” he explained.
The motorists say government intervention is necessary to stabilize the transport sector and ease the economic burden on both drivers and passengers.
