The Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, has appointed Archbishop Bert van Megen, former Apostolic Nuncio to South Sudan and Kenya, as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Germany.
Born in the Netherlands in 1961 and ordained a priest in 1987, Archbishop van Megen brings decades of diplomatic and pastoral experience to his new role. Over the years, he has served the Holy See across Africa, Europe, and Latin America, including earlier assignments as Apostolic Nuncio to Sudan and Eritrea beginning in 2014.
During his mission connected to South Sudan, Archbishop van Megen became widely known for his close pastoral engagement with the local Church.
At a time when the country faced insecurity, humanitarian pressures, and ongoing efforts toward peace and stability, he maintained a visible and active presence among the people.
He traveled extensively across dioceses, often reaching remote and underserved communities. His visits went beyond formal diplomacy—he celebrated Mass with the faithful, met regularly with bishops, clergy, and religious leaders, and encouraged lay communities navigating hardship.
His role was especially significant in strengthening the Church’s voice in peacebuilding, reconciliation, and social healing during fragile periods in the nation’s development.
Church leaders in South Sudan frequently highlighted his commitment to solidarity, noting that he stood with communities not only in moments of celebration but also during times of crisis. His approach reflected a pastoral style grounded in accompaniment, dialogue, and practical support for the Church’s mission in challenging conditions.
While announcing his appointment, Archbishop van Megen shared a message reflecting both gratitude and hope:
“I have the honor to inform you that the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, has appointed me Apostolic Nuncio to the Federal Republic of Germany, with residence in Berlin. The date of my definitive departure from Nairobi will be communicated in due course, as I prepare to take up this new mission in the service of God and His Church. I commend myself to your prayers. In this joyful Easter season, I extend my warm greetings and assurances of my prayers and fraternal esteem.”
