International Nongovernmental Organizations launched a campaign on Tweeter to urge the UN to establish a strong peacekeeping mission in South Sudan.

The UN Security Council is expected to authorize today a new peacekeeping mission in South Sudan that will be called UNMISS.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon recommended that UNMISS should have 7,000 troops.

However, some member states have urged lower troop levels to cut on costs.

Daniel Bekele, Africa director at Human Rights Watch, said the increasing violence and human rights violations this year in South Sudan show the need for a robust and flexible peacekeeping presence in the new state.

Oxfam asked tweeters to send messages to Security Council member states to ensure that new peacekeeping mission gets the full support it needs in order to protect civilians.
