Leaders of the National Congress Party-South Sector announced today that they dissolved the party to join the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement to be united ahead of independence.
Riek Gai Kuk, NCP deputy chairman and former adviser to President Omar Hassan Al Bashir, made the announcement this morning in Juba.
He said the decision was taken by the NCP South sector as a whole and the announcement was made across the ten states.
Mr. Gai, who before 1997 was a senior member of the SPLA/A, said the NCP-South cannot go against the wishes of the Southerners who voted massively for independence from Khartoum.
He added it was time for Southerners to unite around the leadership of Salva Kiir Mayardit.
GoSS minister for information Barnaba Marial Benjamin welcomed the former NCP members into the SPLM.
He said their choice represented a great decision.
Dr. Marial announced that the former NCP members will be formally welcomed into the SPLM during a dinner party on Sunday.
