An African Union high-level delegation has arrived in Juba to engage the Government of South Sudan on the implementation of recent peace resolutions, including the release of detained opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar.

The delegation, led by former Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, who serves as the African Union High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, landed at Juba International Airport earlier this week.

Upon arrival, the delegation was received by Ambassador Akuei Bona Malwal, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of South Sudan.

Their visit follows African Union resolutions adopted in March this year, which call for confidence-building measures among South Sudanese leaders. Key among these measures is the release of political detainees, including Dr. Machar, as part of efforts to revive the stalled peace process.

The visiting delegation is expected to hold high-level discussions with government officials on the AU-led peace initiative, focusing on restoring dialogue and creating a conducive environment for reconciliation.

In addition, talks will address South Sudan’s participation in the upcoming Pretoria conference scheduled for later this month, which is seen as a critical step toward revitalizing the country’s peace roadmap.

The AU High-Level Ad Hoc Committee for South Sudan (C5) is tasked to push for high-level dialogue to bridge gaps between political leaders, as tensions have intensified following the detention of opposition leaders and continued infighting.

The engagement comes amid growing regional and international pressure on South Sudan’s leadership to fully implement peace agreements and ensure lasting stability in the country.
