Catholic institutions under the Archdiocese of Juba have officially announced closure for the Easter holidays, allowing clergy and faithful to fully participate in one of the most important seasons in the Christian calendar.

In a circular dated March 26, 2026, the Archdiocese confirmed that Curia offices will close from Wednesday, April 1, 2026, and resume operations on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.

The notice was signed by Chancellor Fr. Joseph Long Anthony Lomali and addressed to clergy, religious men and women, lay faithful, and all Catholic institutions within the archdiocese.

The temporary closure comes despite the absence of an official public holiday declaration by the Ministry of Labour and Public Service, underscoring the Church’s independent commitment to observing Holy Week.

During this period, many priests are expected to travel from Juba to their respective dioceses and parishes across the country. This annual movement allows them to celebrate Holy Week with their local congregations, lead prayers, and administer sacraments during a spiritually significant time.

Holy Week is traditionally marked by increased pastoral activity, with clergy dedicating time to confessions, liturgical celebrations, and community outreach.

The archdiocese also released the official Holy Week schedule, which will begin with the Chrism Mass on April 1 at St. Theresa’s Cathedral Parish, Kator.

The Mass will be presided over by His Eminence Cardinal Stephen Ameyu, bringing together priests from across the archdiocese for the blessing of holy oils and renewal of priestly vows.

Other key celebrations include Holy Thursday (Mass of the Last Supper) – April 2, Good Friday (Passion of the Lord) – April 3, Holy Saturday (Easter Vigil) – April 4 and Easter Sunday (Resurrection of the Lord) – April 5

The archdiocese has encouraged all faithful to actively participate in the Holy Week liturgies, describing the period as a time for reflection, prayer, and renewal of faith.

Easter commemorates the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ and remains the cornerstone of the Christian faith, drawing large congregations across churches in South Sudan.
