The former deputy governor of Southern Kordofan has expressed concern over the dire situation of civilians in South Kordofan while heavy fighting goes on in the state.

Abdul-Aziz Adam Al-Hilu told Voice of Peace Radio that more than 90 percent of the population in SPLA controlled areas felt unsafe and they took refuge in the mountains surviving in very difficult conditions.

He added that the Sudan air force has bombed more than 100 towns and villages in South Kordofan.

Mr. Abdul-Aziz said the NCP started the war to exterminate the people of Nuba Mountains and gain control over its oil, gold and other natural resources.

Mr. Abdul-Aziz urged the international community to protect civilians from the aggressions and atrocities of the northern forces, including aerial bombardments and militia attacks.

Over 100 thousand people have been displaced by heavy fighting between northern and southern armies since the beginning of June.

The UN is asking the warring parties to allow aid groups to assist the civilians caught in the turmoil.
