A politician who has rebelled against the South Sudan government since May of last year in Jonglei State is in Juba to sign a ceasefire.

GoSS spokesperson Barnaba Marial Benjamin told SCR News that David Yau Yau was now living in Juba after he abandoned his rebellion.

He added that the rebel leader was finalizing talks with senior officials about his reintegration.

Mr. Yau Yau like other militia leaders rebelled in protest of the April 2010 election results.

He lost a parliamentary seat contest to the SPLM candidate as an independent candidate.

Dr. Marial called on the other rebel leaders in South Sudan to make peace with the government and abandon their uprisings before President Salva Kiir’s amnesty ends.

Dr. Marial said that if rebel leaders do not accept peace and reconcile with the government they will be accountable and face justice.

At least six rebel militias are at war with the government of South Sudan.

New clashes between the army and the militia erupted after the region voted in a referendum in January.

Rights groups say the tensions are fuelled by unequal access to resources and a political system that some minority groups feel does not represent their interests.
