The women of Wau launched yesterday a campaign to revamp the town for the Independence celebrations.
The initiative was promoted by “Mothers of Peace”, a group of women that started to work in cooperation with the Justice and Peace Commission to implement the Catholic Church call for action towards the day of the independence.Teresa Pasquale explained that the group has been working since April to plan the action and involve the local authorities in the programme.
She added that the initiative has been approved by the Wau County Commissioner and is supported by the state ministries of Housing, Information and Finance and the Director General of the Council of Ministers.
The different ministries provided financial support to buy cleaning items and fuel for the vehicles used to remove the rubbish and mobilize the community.
Around 50 women gathered at Wau Youth Centre and started to clean the compound.
The minister for Housing and Physical Infrastructure and Social Development were among the cleaners.
Many children and youth joined the women during the morning.
Teresa Anyuat, Minister for Social Development, stressed the importance of the work of women in keeping the country clean and make it beautiful.
She added that cleaning is the responsibility of every citizen and everybody should be trained on how to care for the environment.
Ms. Anyuat said she hoped that through her example other people could get used to the habit of keeping their place clean.
The town was divided into four areas and different groups of volunteers are responsible for each.
The programme will continue every Tuesday and Thursday till July 8.
