Representatives from civil society, students and members of the Abyei Legislative Assembly gathered in Wau to discuss about the situation in the area.
The forum, under the theme “Abyei – Challenges to the current situation and perspectives for solution”, took place last Saturday at Bahr el-Ghazal University.Kuol Fang, Director of Bahr el-Ghazal University, said the issue of Abyei was not a problem of the local people, but should be a concern for all Southerners.
He explained how important it was for all to know the history and understand the causes of the problems in Abyei.
Mr. Deng Alor, Chairperson of Abyei Civil Society, presented an overview of the problems since the area was entrusted to South Kordofan administration in 1905 until the recent attacks.
He focused on the problems the displaced are facing.
Mr. Alor said the main challenge is to provide them with education.
The meeting was organized by South Sudan Organization for Research and Training, a local NGO recently constituted to promote studies and raise awareness on peace building.
