GoSS minister for Finance and Economic Planning said that the drop in value of the Sudanese pound is caused by underproduction and currency black market.

Addressing south Sudan parliamentarians, Minister David Deng Athorbei explained that the region is not producing and therefore the Sudanese pound has lost value.

Mr. Deng added that the Central Bank of Sudan has restricted GoSS access to hard currency resulting in the growth of black market for US dollars.

He added that traders were coming from Khartoum to sell their dollars in Juba’s black market.

Mr. Deng made these remarks yesterday during the third reading of the 2010 budget.
