Tonj South County Police issued an order banning the sale of books in streets and market places.
Chief Inspector of Police Joseph Mayei said that the school books that were brought to the county were for learning and not for sale, Don Bosco FM reported.He said that the sale of schools books was another way of cheating pupils and students in the county.
Mr. Mayei added that the ministry of education gave the books free of charge and people decided to sell them.
He noted that some traders tore books and used the pages to pack sugar and other items.
The inspector accused retailers of buying books and bags distributed by UNICEF at lower prices to sell at the markets for a profit.
He condemned the practice was another way of reducing education levels in the county.
Mr. Mayei added that the police started searching for books and UNICEF bags in shops.
He warned that anyone found selling or tearing books for wrapping goods will be jailed for six months.
Mr. Mayei assured that the police will find who is doing the act among teachers, pupils and sellers.
