Catholic and Anglican Archbishops of Juba issued a statement yesterday denouncing the recent fighting that took place in Abyei while expressing their sadness for the return of war to the region.

Archbishop Paolino Lukudu Loro and Archbishop Daniel Deng Bul said they were sad that the region of Abyei was back to war.

They added that although a political solution has been difficult to achieve there was no excuse for war that put the civilian population at risk.

The two prelates expressed concern about the violence that claimed innocent lives and displaced thousands.

They urged Khartoum to withdraw the decrees that dismissed the Abyei Administration Authority.

Archbishops Paolino and Daniel asked the governments of Khartoum and Juba to restart negotiations and peace talks on Abyei with the assistance of the international community.

The two prelates called for an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of Northern troops from Abyei.

They asked for the deployment of a neutral peace force to allow the quick resettlement for all the displaced.
