Juba secondary school teachers are facing a touch academic year with overcrowded classrooms following a massive return of students from Northern Sudan.

Juba’s secondary schools are taking an average of 70 students or more per classroom this year.

Juba Day Secondary School deputy head George Kenyi told SCR News this morning that the number of students admitted at the institution was huge and the influx of returnees from the North and other neighbouring countries made the situation worse.

He said the 350 first year students are crowded in five classrooms and 210 second years are compacted into another three classes which gives an average of 70 kids per room.

Mr. Kenyi added that the school is under pressure from the community because many students have come back home and want to register to continue with their studies.

He said the Central Equatoria government should lobby GoSS to provide furniture to schools and extend classrooms.

Mr. Kenyi explained that schools in Juba should be given special attention because they provide services to all Southerners and even to foreigners.

Juba Girls School Deputy Head Jackline Marcelino said they have four fully congested classes for first year students with more than 80 pupils each.

She added that every day the number of registering students is increasing due to returnees from Khartoum and other states.

Ms. Marcelino added the situation in classes is uncomfortable both for students and teachers to work.

The situation is identical in Comboni Secondary School where first year classes have an average of 75 students each.
