A huge number of pupils enrolled at Holy Cross Yirol Comboni Primary despite the opening of a second catholic school in town.

The catholic parish opened this year another primary school in Yirol, Lakes State, for older and returnee students in order to ease congestion at the Holy Cross Primary.

Sr. Beatrice Arinitwe, who heads Holy Cross Comboni School, told Good News Radio that her school has experienced a high enrolment turn-up.

She said the school had to find space for returnees from the North and displaced pupils from neighbouring Mapuordit inter-tribal clashes.

Sr. Beatrice said the school has 636 girls and 1,147 boys, a total of over 1780 pupils.

The headmistress lamented the high girls’ dropout due to pregnancies and early marriages.

She urged parents in South Sudan to give girls a chance to receive complete formal education in order to educate the new nation.

The two Yirol primary Catholic schools enrolled a total of 2470 pupils and one third is girls.
