A union has strongly condemned the arrest of a journalist in Abyei and it is calling for his immediate release.

Ngor Arol, a reporter for the controversial Sudan Tribune website, was arrested in Abyei early this month by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).

Bongiri Peter, the Secretary General of South Sudan Union of Journalists, told SCR News that the journalist was reportedly under SAF’s custody and was flown to Khartoum for further interrogation.

He condemned the arrest saying media is the only source of information on the humanitarian situation in Abyei which in turn helps to quicken emergency aid delivery.

The Khartoum government is known for its constant intolerance towards the press in the form of harassment, torture and even killing.
