The regional body IGAD Climate Protection and Application Centre has signed an agreement with UN Development Program to set up an early warning system in South Sudan.
The initiative is to prevent climate crises that affected 2 million people internally displaced due to floods.
The 10 million dollar project funded by UNDP will be implemented through the Ministry of Environments.
Minister of Environment, Josephine Napwon Cosmos, says South Sudan developed its second national determine contributions that identify 28 projects.
She raised concerns that climate change affects crop production and creates poverty in the country.
“The Climate crisis is worsening in the republic of South Sudan and Over 2 million people are internally displaced due to flooding.
“Currently Over 60 percent of our people now categorize as food in securer to address this impact the Ministry of Environment and Forestry develop national adaption which is Napa and the first national adaption plan our Napa identified 28 projects.
The UNDP Country Representative Dr Samuel Doe says the establishment of an early warning system will mark a significant step to combat the impact of climate change in South Sudan.
Dr. Doe acknowledges the IGAD’s expertise to establish a robust predictive modeling system using applications to provide climate information and risk communication.
Samuel Doe adds that the early warning system will strengthen South Sudan’s capacity to accurately focus on weather and climate pretenses.

“In the system part ICPAC has compared to another region of Africa establish an episode East African hazard watch which monitors and also broadcast key indicators for early warning on floods and paste.
Dr. Ahmed revealed that 10 completed hydro met stations from the IGAD project already in the country need to be installed in strategy allocations along the rivers.
