Vatican Secretary calls for peace and reconciliation in South Sudan

The Secretary of State of Vatican City in Italy His Eminence Pietro Parolin called on South Sudanese to embrace the spirit of peace and reconciliation.

He says promoting unity among the people will make the country build a harmonious society.

Cardinal Parolin arrived in Juba on Monday 14th August after being delegated by His Holiness Pope Francis to follow up on the progress of peace implementation.

The Vatican Secretary met President Salva Kiir and deliver the goodwill message of Pope Francis who made a historic visit to South Sudan this year.

The Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Deng Dau Deng says the meeting discussed a peace implementation and the country’s preparation for general elections in 2024.

Pope’s envoy is expected to celebrate a Mass with the Internally Displaced Persons in Malakal and the returnees who fled the conflict in Sudan.

He will also visit Rumbek Diocese in Lakes State before his return to the Vatican City on Thursday 18th August 2023.
