The presence of landmines in Eastern Equatoria scares the community from utilizing the land for agriculture.

Agriculture minister Jerome Surur Gama said that despite the vast, rich and fertility lands of the state, landmines have reduced to dependence as the warfare leftover threaten people, Emmanuel Radio reported.

The minister said fertile areas around river Aswa basin in Magwi County have been heavily mined and are inaccessible for farming.

He appealed to the international community that more efforts are needed to de-mine the region since the first attempts bears little success.

Mr. Surur made these comments yesterday on the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action celebration in Torit.

The day slid-by unnoticed in Eastern Equatoria state.
