The Vicar General of the Catholic Diocese of Torit has urged the faithful to sustain their diocesan priests.

Fr. Celestino Muras made the appeal after the Sunday mass at St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Torit.

He said Christians could make small contributions to sustain the priests instead of relying on the Vatican for the upkeep of the clergy.

Fr. Muras added that while some parishes could afford to get a reasonable offertory, others in Lafon, Lobone and Chukudum are very poor and people bring bullets to the Church.

He advised Christians to desist from taking bullets to the offertory in the church, stressing that priests cannot sell the ammunitions for killing human beings.

Fr. Muras was explaining to the Christians some of the key issues discussed during the diocesan annual general meeting that ended on Friday.

The upkeep of priests together with the strengthening of pastoral activities and the establishment of Christian communities among the people were among the assembly’s major concerns.

Provision of social services such as education, health care, clean water, nutrition and food security and sanitation in the state were also discussed.

The four days meeting attracted the diocesan clergy and social development workers as well as funding partners to the development programmes implemented by the diocese.
