Torit today joined the rest of the world to celebrate International Women’s Day in Freedom Square.
Several stakeholders, including state ministers and representatives of international and indigenous NGOs attended the occasion, Emmanuel Radio reported.UNMIS Gender Affairs officer Margaret Joshua explained that the international Women’s day does not mean that men and husbands are to cook in the houses.
She said the outstanding importance of the event is to review on how women have come in their struggle.
Ms. Joshua added that Eastern Equatoria women should review their achievements since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
The UNMIS officer said women should consider taking the day as an opportunity to unite, network and mobilize for a meaningful change.
Ms. Joshua stresses that women are the agents of peace building in the counties through inter-marriages.
Eastern Equatoria UNMIS Human Rights focal point Shilla Kim said women’s rights should be on the top of new priorities as they played a great role in South Sudan.
She stressed equal access to education as key factor to women empowerment towards full participation in politics at all levels.
This year’s celebrations marked the hundredth anniversary of International Women’s Day.
