South Sudan is a fertile ground for the spread of the virus causing HIV and AIDS infections.

The alert comes from Fr. Alex Ojiera, a specialist in HIV and Aids management and care. He told Good News Radio that polygamy and inheritance of widows make South Sudan a conducive place for the spread HIV virus.

He explained that a polygamous man who contracts HIV and passes away after infecting his wives, exposes the community to the virus as the widows will be inherited by other polygamous men who in turn will spread it to other sexual partners.

Fr. Ojiera said pastoral agents are informing the communities about the reality of HIV and Aids during the Mass, adding that they encourage people to know their HIV and AIDs status through testing.

He also said although one can contract the virus through sharing syringes or sharp objects like razorblades, sex remains the leading way of passing on the virus.

Fr. Ojiera clarified that no one gets infected with HIV through shaking of hands, using the same bathroom, eating together, or even sharing a bed.
